Guys, my gf texted me last night to say that there was an attack in Paris and I freaked the hell out. I’m still pretty shaky because of the following...

My brother is studying abroad and went to France for the weekend.

He got tickets go that game on a whim.

He was at the game.

The following two hours were the longest in my and my family’s life. I messaged him to call me, text me, anything as soon as he could. My gf was crying and her mom called my mom.

My mom thought his trip was next week so everyone calmed down. I didn’t correct them.

Then My mom asked my sister (who was at work and had not heard the events). “Oh, he’s at the Germany vs France game!”. My mom’s heart sank and said that there was an attack. Cue the panic attack during work.

My mom called me as I got a call from my brother.

Before she could say anything I told her “Mom, I’m on the phone with him. He’s safe. I’ll call you back.”

I took some screenshots of our video chat as proof and had him call my mom as I sent the shot to some friends who were concerned. He called me after and this is a paraphrased story from him:

He went to the game with a couple friends and at a point they heard three loud booms, similar to fireworks nearby, spaced out over a few minutes. Nobody in the stadium knew what they were but no announcements were made and the game went on. He was already on his way down the stairs at the final whistle, which was important here because he and his friends made it out before the fans were kept inside on the field. HeHe walked to the metro and noticed a parade of heavily armed military forces heading in the opposite direction. They got to the Metro and caught what turned out to be the last train. A friend with an international phone plan got a call from family and they found out there was a terrorist attack. No other details. They got to the hotel and my messages reached him so he called. He said that about 120 kids were in the program across two hotels. The city got shut down and foreigners couldn’t get to their hotels so locals and Air B&B were being used to shelter people. He sent me a pic of a military transport and armed forces outside the hotel and we got an email from the program stating all students were accounted for.this mornings update was that they could use cabs to go around the city (all monuments closed) and be back by 7 but he’s staying put. If it was ISIS, they don’t “play by the rules and he isnt chancing it. Flight out is tomorrow if they can travel.

During our conversation, he was noticeably struck by how lucky he was. This look got over his face. It hit meme, too...I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t hear from him. I cannot imagine how the families of the victims are doing, or anyone else waiting on information.

I’m standing in solidarity with France, for what it is worth. And I am so thankful my brother is OK.

I can imagine what you went through. In 2003, my dad had deployed to Iraq as an engineer. The Humvee he was in went over an IED. After many surgeries, he survived with a wound on his shoulder and monocular vision.

I’m really glad your brother is okay.
